OUR STORY The BRENTLEY INSTITUTE was founded twenty one years ago with the strict purpose of providing low cost education and placement opportunities for persons desiring to work in the security management industry. One of the Institute's main affirmative positions is that a formal college environment is not for everyone. Up until 1992, the State of Ohio allowed private security schools to administer their own "in-house" examinations. Security Officers were approved by the State on the basis of pass/fail information provided by a particular school. Many of these schools reported students scoring 95% or better on the final examination as a continuous standard. BRENTLEY found that to be an amazing statistic! These schools appeared to be in the money gouging business, and not the education business. BRENTLEY spearheaded the drive for the State of Ohio to administer a standardized test that applied to all schools, which subsequently took the testing function from individual schools. There had to be some legitimacy, if the industry was to thrive/survive. A professional image was paramount. Among other things, this was one example of the state of the industry at the time BRENTLEY became operational. The BRENTLEY INSTITUTE is a collection of educators with many and varied experiences in the adult education field, coupled with private and public law enforcement interests. BRENTLEY has over 43 years of experience in areas that directly impact the security/loss prevention industry. BRENTLEY is not composed of retired law enforcement folks who are looking to supplement their retirement income. BRENTLEY is dedicated to adult education with emphasis directed to economic issues as they impact the "ability to benefit student". In achieving this educational and job placement objective, the ACADEMY endeavors to maximize optimum instructional methodologies, thus enhancing the learning process in a non-traditional learning atmosphere. THE INSTITUTE'S experience in the adult education industry has been realized over 27 years. Vocational schools must understand that there are unique qualities, teaching objectives, and specifically, a strong dedication that must be demonstrated in the "school-to-work" school. By design, adult vocational schools must balance the "total" student, in terms of family, work, finances, and the quick effort that is necessary to place the student. The goal is the workforce - training is only training if the graduate does not become employed. JOB PLACEMENT IS THE GOAL OF VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS. The educational component is only as strong, or successful as the student/graduate realizes employment for which she or he been trained. THE INSTITUTE assisted in writing the new and revised private security curriculum that took over three and one half years to complete. In 1991, the Institute was one of seven schools chosen by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Council (renamed the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission) to administer the curricula as a test site training facility. After eighteen months, BRENTLEY was the ONLY school in the State of Ohio that continued using the new curriculum and forwarded educational data to the Commission to consider in the drafting of the final security curriculum, and testing instrument. This curriculum ultimately became the minimum academic requirements for the private security professional in Ohio. Additional highlights for the INSTITUTE include: assisting changing the State regulations that now allow private security candidates to sit for a re-test if they score lower than the acceptable standard of 70%. This re-test procedure was once only reserved for commissioned police officers, correctional officers, and bailiffs. BRENTELY was the only school in the State that championed this change. Some schools were against it because they saw a window of lost revenue. THE INSTITUTE was instrumental in forging ahead with such areas as Hazardous Awareness First Responder (HAZMAT) training, because many companies needed this type of safety observation. To date, BRENTLEY is one of only a FEW private security schools in the State of Ohio that offers HazMat training. THE INSTITUTE authored the required topic on Cultural Sensitivity, designed to assist the security professional in understanding cultural differences between groups, and how discrimination can result in criminal and/or civil liabilities and damages. BRENTLEY will continue to change, and modify curricula, as it becomes realistic and more dynamic to the placement process, AND, will continue to exceed the minimum hours for training certification. THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION IS THE CENTRAL COMPONENT OF THE MISSION/PHILOSOPHY OF THE BRENTLEY INSTITUTE, INC. The ACADEMY feels strongly that a graduate of our school has a decided advantage over other graduates in private security, because of the quality and integrity of the educational program. It is the desire of the INSTITUTE to continue delivering the best quality education and superior training to females and males, at the lowest possible cost. Our vision and realistic approach to the delivery of adult educational systems has made THE INSITUTE the gold standard for private security/loss prevention training in the State of Ohio. Ohio continues to be one of the leaders in private loss prevention schools, and the certification from our ACADEMY will stimulate your growth, educational opportunities, and possible placements in some adjoining states that surround Ohio. Many of our students have gone elsewhere in the country, and have had their certifications, and course work waived for employment opportunities because of the quality of training in private law enforcement in Ohio. We cannot guarantee jobs, or placements in other states with the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission's Private Security Program, but we will do our very best to get you where you want to go in the fastest growing industry in the world!
